Sven EhnIn New Tools for Health (NTFH), smart care solutions are being developed and supported. These will, in the long term, generate growth in the region. Sven Ehn, NFTH’s Managing Director, sees ample scope for innovations that will give more care recipients the option of remaining in their own homes, thereby reducing pressure on healthcare and community care services.

Sooner or later in life, most of us need some form of healthcare or personal care. The burden on care services is increasing as more of us grow ever older while a dwindling number of people work and foot the bill. Our conviction is that developing technical aids to enable people to look after themselves to a greater extent can relieve this burden. This will facilitate the work of health and community care professionals, and give more patients the chance to stay at home.

NFTH operates in a sector that is expanding rapidly. As monopolies are abolished, new doors to novel solutions for smart care are opening. Research reports show, too, that home-based healthcare and community care are often both more efficient and more humane than their institutional counterparts. And as yet we have seen only the beginning.

Our aim is to make our county, Östergötland, a European leader in terms of cutting-edge skills for efficient healthcare and personal care in the home environment. During the year, I look forward to getting involved in commercialising more smart care products and services. In the longer term, I would like to see more companies that develop products and services in home-based healthcare and community care choosing to start operating in our region. Today, Östergötland is already an IT hub and numerous IT companies have been founded here. Many of them focus on technologies with a bearing on home-based health care and personal care services, examples being visualisation, image processing, broadband TV and telephony, and medication technology. In addition, we have a long tradition of advanced home medical care and a world-class university with a strong commitment to our work. In short, we have every prospect of succeeding.
